 Standard Cancellation Policy:
For cancellation prior to registration deadline, a $5 processing fee per registrant will be retained by KNC.  Between registration deadline and day of program, a 25% processing fee per registrant, with a minimum of $5, will be retained by KNC.: No refunds day of event or after.

This is a two-part training workshop for participants of the Michigan Butterfly Network. The training workshop is geared toward new participants and those returning for their second or third season as a refresher. Part 1 will be about the protocol, any updates from last year, and an introduction to butterfly identification, and Part 2 will be focused on butterfly identification. Veteran monitors are welcome to attend! The outdoor portion of the training will be held at Willard Rose Prairie May 21 from 2-5 pm, where we will conduct a census. All age levels are welcome, but we recommend children have a keen interest in learning about butterflies and survey methods. We have had monitors as young as 7 years old successfully participate in the program. Standard Cancellation Policy applies.

This training will review the butterfly monitoring protocol and include instruction on advance butterfly identification. Training is geared toward experienced butterfly enthusiasts and returning monitors of the Michigan Butterfly Network. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a more in-depth conversation about swallowtails and skippers, provide feedback from previous monitoring sessions, and examine specimens from the KNC collection. Times: New Monitor training: Saturday, June 11, 12:30 pm - 5 pm Veteran and New Monitor training: Sunday, June 12, 10 am - 12 pm Maxton Plains (TNC) Field Trip: Sunday, June 12, 12:45-4 pm Program location: Drummond Island Resort & Conference Center, 33494 S Maxton Road, Drummond Island, MI 49726 Registration and payment required by May 20, 2016 Join the Michigan Butterfly Network for a two day destination training workshop on Drummond Island! Learn how to ID butterflies, follow the standardized protocol for monitoring butterflies in your community, and submit your data to a national database. Use your new skills to observe and document butterflies during our Maxton Plains field trip on day two. Day 1 will be about the protocol, any updates from last year, and an introduction to butterfly identification, and Day 2 will be focused on butterfly identification inside and out in the field. Veteran monitors are welcome to attend! Indoor training for day 1 and day 2 will be held in the Annex located at the Drummond Island Resort, and upon conclusion of the indoor day 2 training we will caravan to the 1,210 acre Maxton Plains Preserve for our field trip. Bring appropriate clothing for both indoor and outdoor activities. Hiking equipment recommended for day two: boots, long pants, bug spray, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, binoculars, etc. Upon completion of this training, you will be able to participate in MiBN butterfly surveys at assigned routes and locations, and help to compile butterfly data that can be used by scientists performing important research! Join biologists from the Kalamazoo Nature Center's Michigan Butterfly Network to observe the beauty of our natural areas and to spot butterflies. Butterfly possibilities include: Hickory Hairstreak, Acadian Hairstreak, and Silvery Checkerspot! If it is raining, we will postpone the trip. Please include your email address when registering and we will be sure to let you know of other date options. Miscellaneous information: To carpool with us, meet at the Sundial in the main parking lot at 11:15am. If you plan on driving on your own we will see you in the parking lot of Leonard Preserve at 1:00pm. Registration required by June 21. Attendance minimum=5. Standard cancellation policy applies.

Baker Sanctuary is one of Michigan Audubon's largest sanctuaries with nearly 900 acres of varied habitat including prairies and wetlands. NOTE: Carpool leaves KNC at 11:30 am; meet at Jeptha Lake Fen at 1 pm. Jeptha Lake Fen was acquired by the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy with the hope of protecting the high-quality wetlands found along the shores of Upper and Lower Jeptha Lakes. Twenty six species of butterflies have been found here. Possibilities include Dorcus and Purplish Coppers . Rubber boots are highly recommended for this trip! Location: Jeptha Lake Fen (Columbia Twp, Van Buren County) Directions: From M-43 exit at 50th St (CR673) (about 4 miles west of Glendale and 4 miles east of Bangor) (only one street sign on south side of M-43). Turn north and go to 20th Ave./CR 380 ( 50th St. will jog slightly to the left before you reach 20th Ave. ). Turn east onto 20th Ave./CR 380. When 20th Ave. turns at 49th St. , continue straight ahead onto a gravel driveway and park in front of the yellow gate to your right in the yard. The preserve entrance is just beyond the gate. Join biologists from the Kalamazoo Nature Center's Michigan Butterfly Network to observe the beauty of our natural areas and to spot butterflies. The Grass River Natural Area covers more than 1,443 acres which include a wide diversity of natural habitats: open fields, upland forests, marshes, swamps, creeks and rivers. Grass River is a 2.5 mile waterway connecting Lake Bellaire and Clam Lake, forming part of Antrim County's "Chain of Lakes." Program Location 6500 Alden Highway Bellaire, MI The Grass River Natural Area entrance is off Alden Highway (Co. Road 618), 4 miles northeast of Alden, 6 miles south of Bellaire and 8 miles west of Mancelona. The preserve is also accessible by boat from the Grass River dock located between Clam Lake and Lake Bellaire. We will meet at the Grass River Center, just up the path from the main parking lot Registration required by August 1. Standard cancellation policy applies.
